Winter is HERE (well, almost here) which can only mean one thing, my kids will be begging me for hot chocolate.
Who can blame them? Rich, creamy hot chocolate is a cultural celebration in our part of the world, and what mom doesn’t want their kids to have the same sweet, cozy memories that we had as children? Warm bellies and happy hearts after an afternoon adventuring outdoors. Walking into a warm house with frozen hands, grabbing a steaming mug and breathing that deep sigh of comfort carries all kinds of nostalgia, am I right?
I was raised on packets of hot chocolate, the kind that come with freeze dried marshmallows that melt away when you mix in the hot water (or milk if you got lucky).
Now that I’m a mom, especially a mom to a child with severe food sensitivities, easy-to-make treats are a luxury we cannot afford anymore. These packets are loaded with preservatives, additives, MSG an dozens of other synthetic or artificial ingredients that send my little one into a sensory driven nightmare.
Upon discovering the truth behind the ingredient lists of major companies like Swiss Miss, I’ve said goodbye to the chemical laden hot chocolate packets and had to go back to the basics, which is where this very nourishing, GUILT FREE hot chocolate was born.
There are 4 simple, nutrient rich ingredients, (staples in our cupboard, and hopefully yours too) and it takes less than 5 minutes to throw this together. PRO TIP >> Do not over heat the almond milk, warm to moderately hot is ok, but any higher than that and you kill off all of the beneficial enzymes and nutrients from your raw ingredients.
Being able to say YES when my kids ask for treats is something we’ve always struggled with, so here’s another YES recipe I can add to your arsenal, and if you’re just beginning your journey away from processed foods, feel free to add raw honey or stevia to help transition your little one, and reduce slowly as their taste buds adjust. Baby steps mama, you got this.
SIMPLE HOT CHOCOLATE
(with only 4 ingredients)
>> 5 Cups of Plant Based Milk
(I use Almond)
>> 3 Tablespoons Raw Cacao Powder
>> 1/3 Cup Raw, Unfiltered Honey
>> 2 TBSP Virgin, unrefined Coconut Oil
Heat the almond milk to no more than 120 degrees, this allows the raw enzymes and nutrients to stay intact.
(if you don’t have a thermometer, don’t stress, just try to aim for very warm to slightly hot, or a temperature that your child would be comfortable drinking) Once you’ve reached your ideal temperature, whisk in the cacao powder until completely dissolved, then add the honey and the coconut oil and whisk until combined. Taste test for sweetness, add additional sweetener if necessary (I recommend stevia if you’re eliminating sugar). Serve immediately and enjoy your guilt free, rich, superfood fueled treat!
Other options for this would be to add vanilla (I recommend fresh beans or homemade vanilla extract), peppermint, or any other of your favorite variations! If you try something and you love it, sound off in the comments for others to try!
Here’s to health and healing,
